Sport Logo Critique.

Below in my last blog i uploaded 3 logo concepts for my Japanese Novelty sport Beetle Battle.
The name for my sports team is called the Aggressive Armor. The name originated from my Greek hero, Hercules, and from the stories that had been written about him there was a story about him defeating a wild feral Lion. The lions skin was apparently un-penetrable, so hercules then striped it from the beast and used it's skin as armor. I also chose the sport beetle battle because it was a very un-popular sport and chose to give it a bit of spot light. As well there is such thing as a Hercules beetle so i thought what a great combo. So below in the previous blog you will see my three logos.

The first logo is a black and white shield logo. I portrayed as the top view of a beetle as the shield and then tried to incorporate the face or facial features of Hercule's beast on the beetle. I didn't know what to do with the type, so I just had it wrapped around in a scroll going across the imagery and then had the left over text curve at the bottom.

The second logo i had used the same imagery as the first concept, but had added colour to it. i used an orange from the colour of the wild beast that hercules strangled, incorporating the fur from the beast. The brown colour comes from the club that Hercules roamed around with, the club symbolizes power, might, and strength. As for the type I wrapped it around the imagery to show it more as a shield like logo.

The third logo was trying incorporate all f the elements, so Hercules, the Beast and even beetles. I used Hercules beetle silhouettes as shoulder pads for the armor. I tried to incorporate hercules by having his beard noticeable. For the helmut I incorporated the Beast as the helmet. I wasn't too sure how I was going to lay out the text, but it would probably be underneath or on top with a impactive, strong bold font.

  1. On first viewing, the strongest logo is by far logo 1. This logo, seems well developed, compositionally eye pleasing and conceptually strong. Turning the beetle into a shield/ armour covered in lion skin is a very clever reference to the Greek God researched and I particularly like that the sport has been chosen in reference to the Hercules Beetle. This gives the logo strength with an added dimension.

In addition to this, having the ‘finishing ribbon’ or sash communicates strongly the nature of the sport highlighting that there can be only one winner. However, whether this is something that is more associated with a runner crossing the race finish line could be questioned. Perhaps the Beetle could be holding the ribbon above his head in victory instead.

The static design is neat, compact and strong. The logo is symmetrical and will be easily transferrable to a wide range of media/ vehicles. The vertical lines used on the finishing ribbon/ sash reflect the vertical lines on the body of the beetle and this is further strengthened by the strong vertical line on the beetles head.

The logo could be strengthened further by adding colour; however, I feel the colour combination displayed in logo 2 confuses the concept. When looking at this I can no longer see the beetle as the colours are so strongly linked with that of a lion. I feel that the lion’s jaws and sharp teeth are strong enough to be used without the brown “fur” and still retain their strength and association. To strengthen the beetle aspect I would recommend sticking to black, perhaps accented with white or red and perhaps giving the beetle a 3 dimensional feel through the use of layering colours or using a gradient.

The typography is stronger in concept 1; however the type along the bottom of the beetle looks a little out of place. I would recommend either putting all the type into the ribbon or mirroring the word aggressive at the top of the beetle. A similar approach to this suggestion has been attempted in logo 2. However, I think this has been exaggerated a little too much and perhaps could be more subtle. It will be interesting to see what type style is chosen to convey the word Aggressive Armour. My suggestion would be choosing two. For the word “Aggressive” a typeface which is dominating and aggressive (obviously!) and for armour something more straight, solid and subtle but one that has great strength.

Logo 3 I feel is too busy and does not communicate the concept effectively. On viewing this logo I get confused and question what the sport in question is. To me, this represents a lion eating beetle sport. This logo would not work well across a variety of platforms and reducing it down in size would become too detailed and intricate. At present there is no text and adding this would confuse the matter further.

In conclusion, logo 1 is by far the strongest and by making a few minor changes a very well developed, eye pleasing and conceptually strong logo could be produced that will work well across a variety of platforms.
